RONALDO A. PARAAN, MD

An anterior segment surgeon of 27 years in private practice servicing both private and indigent clientele in Northern Luzon.

Due to a significant number of indigent patients who could not afford professional and hospitalization costs for surgery—early in his private practice, he established a SECregistered non-profit, non-stock organization in 1986 with two other UP alumni. The corporation provides subsidy to indigent patients requiring cataract, glaucoma and cleft lip/ palate surgeries. The corporation has evolved from a surgical intervention-oriented program to a multifaceted program for persons with disabilities which includes communitybased rehabilitation, primary eye and ear care, training of Barangay health workers, livelihood subsidies, inclusion education especially for visually-impaired children, and referrals for other disabilities.

He has served as a trustee and consultant surgeon in the Northern Luzon Association of the Blind, Inc. since 1984. The NLAB provides formal education to children in the Northern Philippines prior to their inclusion into regular primary public schools in the children’s hometowns. The corporation also trains adult masseurs and provides support for self-reliant massage clinics in the city after proficient levels of skills have been attained. Starting as a clinical instructor I in the St. Louis University College of Medicine in 1981, he now holds the rank of Professor 12 after serving as Faculty and Department Chairman intermittently over 25 years.

As a part time consultant in ophthalmology at the St. Louis University Sacred Heart Hospital, he has served as chairman of the department on rotation and accredited a residency training program in 1995.

He now serves as member of the Executive Committee of the Notre Dame de Chartres Hospital and sits as a chairman of the Medical Education and Operating Room Management committees. He likewise serves as the official spokesman of Notre Dame.

Having earned prominence in his field of specialization and in recognition of his family’s contribution to the history of Baguio City, he has recently been appointed by the Mayor of the City of Baguio as a member of the Baguio Centennial Commission whose job is to plan the activities for Baguio’s Centennial celebration in the years preceding the 2009 anniversary.

Professing sound clinical judgment and highly technical surgical skills with effective communication skills with all levels of management and staff, he holds an admirable reputation as a clinician and meticulous surgeon, exacting mentor and facilitator, a friend, and a confidant and a musician.
